Billboard reports that Tate McRae’s Housewife, her new single, debuts at No. 2 on the Hot 100 for the chart dated Oct. 31. It is her highest-charting song as a lead artist, and it trails only Ella Langley’s Choosin’ Texas, which returns for a 25th week at No. 1. For pop fans, the short version is simple: McRae just landed her strongest lead-artist spot yet and came within one slot of the summit. The result came in a Billboard staff roundtable, where writers weighed in on the debut and what comes next.

After a couple of slower weeks near the top of the chart, this week brings real movement. Two other new entries crowd the top five. Olivia Rodrigo and Chappell Roan’s remix of “Expectations” climbs from No. 63 to No. 3, a long jump for a song whose solo version had peaked at No. 20. Zach Bryan’s duet with Lana Del Rey, “Lies,” bows at No. 4. All three landed just short of passing Langley.

Billboard’s staff rated the McRae debut on a 1-to-10 scale, and the scores ran from 7.5 to 9. Christopher Claxton and Joe Lynch both noted that the single also opened at No. 1 on Billboard’s two global charts. Claxton also pointed out that the song ranked above new releases from Taylor Swift and other major names. Michael Saponara added that it was the most-streamed song in the country and that McRae debuted it live at the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show. He also said her work with producer Ryan Tedder keeps building on one of pop’s strongest artist-producer partnerships.

Which new hit will last the longest?

Four of the five staffers who answered picked Housewife as the song most likely to keep charting. Hannah Dailey was the exception, choosing Lies because it is a brand-new track with broad, cross-generational appeal. She noted that the Rodrigo and Roan song is a remix of a track already out.

Claxton cited Luminate data showing Housewife earned 55.9 million global streams and 6,000 sales worldwide in its first tracking week. He called that figure very high but said he sees room to grow, especially if McRae keeps performing the song live. Andrew Unterberger said the single was still leading daily streaming lists on Spotify and Apple Music, and that it was gaining ground on radio.

Lynch expects the Rodrigo and Roan remix to keep streaming well but doubts it will stay in heavy radio rotation through 2027. He also predicts Lies will slip out of the top 10 within a week or two, though he could see it becoming a long-running No. 1 on Adult Alternative Airplay.

Unterberger said No. 3 feels right for the “Expectations” remix. Remixes are more likely to boost an established hit than create a brand-new one, he noted, and the song is now among the best-performing tracks from one of the year’s best-performing albums.

Lies is Bryan’s second top-five Hot 100 hit with a big-name female duet partner, following “I Remember Everything” with Kacey Musgraves, which topped the chart in 2024. Staffers floated a few names for a possible third duet, including Megan Moroney, Tate McRae and Avery Anna.

Saponara noted that Tedder has said Housewife closes the book on the 2000s-era pop sound McRae has carefully built. Fans may hear a shift when her fourth album arrives, which is on the horizon for the first quarter of 2027.

Looking ahead to the top spot, four of the five staffers who answered predicted another No. 1 before the holiday rush. Claxton was the lone no. Unterberger said Housewife could reach No. 1 after the holidays if Choosin’ Texas starts to lose steam. These are staff predictions, not chart results, and the coming weeks will show which ones hold.
