National Album Day 2026 gave vinyl LP sales a clear lift, according to Music Week, which reported that Official Charts data shows sales rose 56% compared with the previous weekend. The ninth edition took place on Saturday, October 17, and drew on wide support from retailers, digital services and the BBC.
The weekly jump was not the only sign of momentum. Vinyl LP sales were also up 25% year on year, based on the same Official Charts data, Music Week reports.
Did National Album Day actually drive the vinyl spike?
Music Week acknowledges that Fontaines DC’s new album, Dopamine Chamber, will also have been a factor in the market. Even so, National Album Day titles accounted for 47 entries in the Official Vinyl Albums Chart Top 100 and roughly one in every six vinyl albums sold over the weekend.
In other words, the event’s own titles made up a large share of the weekend’s vinyl activity, and they came with plenty of promotional muscle behind them. The event carried 85 album releases and reissues from record labels.
Lead titles, according to midweek data, included Tears For Fears’ Seeds Of Love, Michael Jackson’s Invincible, Pink Floyd’s Meddle, George Michael’s Listen Without Prejudice Vol 1, Adam and the Ants’ Kings of the Wild Frontier and the Housemartins’ London 0 Hull 4. Music Week also listed a wider group of reissues across genres and eras, including albums by Bob Dylan, Donna Summer, Sade, Suede, T.Rex and The Who.
Other standouts included Robbie Williams’ Sing When You’re Winning and PinkPantheress’ debut To Hell With It, which was reissued on clear vinyl. Max Richter’s new work, While the Flood Rages, was released to coincide with the event, and The Damned’s Not Like Everybody Else was repromoted.
The campaign drew more than 200 press and online articles and over 600 broadcast mentions. More than 100 of those broadcast mentions came from BBC Radio 2, which has a weekly audience reach of 12.37 million. Social media engagements reached 5.6 million so far, and Instagram engagements alone were up 35% on last year’s figure.
BBC Radio 2 and BBC Sounds ran special programming, including Eras: Spice Girls, Icons, Radio 2 Presenter Picks and CBeebies Bedtime Stories. There was also a tie-in with the Icons theme from BBC One’s Strictly Come Dancing.
Album Champion and former Spice Girl Melanie C took part in a Classic Album Sundays event for the campaign at the British Library, where she discussed her album influences and solo career. The appearance also marked 30 years of Spice.
Hundreds of record shops, retailers and digital services joined in with displays, events, promotions, playlists and social content. Named partners included HMV, Fopp, Rarewaves, Amazon, Spotify, YouTube and a range of independent stores.
Separately, PPL produced a chart of Robbie Williams’ most played songs on UK TV and radio this century, topped by Feel. Taken together, the campaign’s reach across retail, radio and charts shows how much of the push relied on partners rather than a single channel.
“These celebrations remind us of the enduring appeal of the format and its continuing importance in our music ecosystem,” Dr Jo Twist OBE, BPI CEO, and Kim Bayley, ERA CEO, said in a joint statement.
The same statement thanked the Album Champions and artists, BBC Radio 2 and BBC Sounds, the official supporters, Classic Album Sundays and the British Library, and the fans who took part.
National Album Day is organised jointly by the BPI, which runs the BRIT Awards and Mercury Prize, and ERA, the digital entertainment and retail association that also runs Record Store Day. Official supporters included Cherry Red Records, DP World, Official Charts, PPL, Proper Music and Trapeze Music.
The event now looks ahead to its 10th anniversary, which will be celebrated in October 2027.
