Carrie season two is officially on the way. Prime Video has renewed the Stephen King adaptation for a second season, according to The Hollywood Reporter, and the new episodes will keep following Carrie White after the fateful events of prom night. For a series that only just launched, the pickup is a fast one.
The timing is what stands out. The renewal arrived two weeks after season one premiered on Oct. 7. Prime Video says the first season was the No. 1 title on the Amazon-owned streamer in more than 100 territories during its first two weeks, a reach the company highlighted in its announcement.
Season one moved King’s debut novel into the present day. It follows the sheltered Carrie as she enters public high school after her father’s death, while her mother, played by Samantha Sloyan, keeps a watchful eye on her every move.
The season one logline also describes a viral bullying scandal that tears through her community, the cruelty and pressure of the social-media age, and mysterious telekinetic powers that surface as she grows up. Together, those threads set up a story that was never meant to end at the prom, the show’s creators have said.
Who is returning to run the show?
Mike Flanagan, who adapted King’s novel, will continue as showrunner and executive producer for season two. King is also an executive producer on the new season, so the author remains closely tied to the project. The series will keep following Carrie White, played by Summer H. Howell. The announcement did not name season two cast members or a premiere date.
“It speaks to the enduring power of this story and signals that Mike Flanagan’s reimagining of the iconic IP has real breadth.” Peter Friedlander, head of global television at Amazon MGM Studios, said.
Friedlander said the show is connecting with longtime Stephen King fans as well as a newer generation, including young adults and international audiences. He pointed to particular strength among female viewers. Amazon MGM Studios, he added, is excited to see where Flanagan and King take the story next.
“From the beginning, we imagined a story that goes far beyond the prom.” Mike Flanagan, the showrunner, said.
Flanagan also said he is grateful for King’s trust and support in exploring what comes next for the character. King, for his part, said he and Flanagan are excited about the path ahead and that he cannot wait for audiences to see what is down the road for Carrie White.
Behind the camera, Flanagan and King executive produced season one with Trevor Macy. Flanagan directed four of the first season’s eight episodes. Kate Siegel, Axelle Carolyn, Kyra Sedgwick and Hiromi Kamata also took turns in the director’s chair, which gives the creative core of the first season a clear continuity heading into the next run.
The season one cast featured Siena Agudong, Alison Thornton, Joel Oulette, Josie Totah, Arthur Conti, Thalia Dudek, Amber Midthunder and Matthew Lillard. Kate Siegel, Michael Trucco, Crystal Balint, Rahul Kohli, Tim Bagley and Heather Graham had recurring roles, and several of those names give fans a sense of the show’s wide reach.
For fans, the takeaway is simple. The story is moving past prom night, and the creative team behind season one is staying on for what comes next.
