The Manic Street Preachers Suede tour kicked off at the OVO Hydro in Glasgow on Wednesday, October 28, according to NME. Suede premiered a brand new song, ‘My City’, while the Manics teased an announcement to mark the anniversary of their 1992 album Generation Terrorists. For fans, it was a night of old favourites, a fresh track and a clue about what comes next.

The two bands confirmed earlier this spring that they would be sharing the bill again. They first hit the road together in 1994, then played a run of joint North American shows in 2022 and a UK trek in 2024. NME’s report frames this run as the latest chapter in a long shared history.

Suede frontman Brett Anderson has spoken warmly about the pairing before. Last year he told NME he is very fond of the Manics, and said the two bands occupy similar territory without the tour feeling like a nostalgic Britpop party.

How does the co-headline run work?

Each night the two bands alternate between who plays first and who closes the show. On opening night, the Manics went first, starting their 18-song set with 1992’s ‘Motorcycle Emptiness’. They followed it with 2001’s ‘Ocean Spray’ and the newer ‘Decline & Fall’.

Among the highlights, according to NME, were acoustic renditions of ‘From Despair To Where’ and ‘The Everlasting’. The set also included ‘Faster’ and ‘Die In The Summertime’, two songs from The Holy Bible, an album that received a major re-release last week in collaboration with Steven Wilson.

The anniversary clue

Eagle-eyed fans at the merch stands noticed posters displaying the Generation Terrorists artwork beside a QR code. Scanning it invites people to sign up for updates with their name and email address. The artwork also shows the words ’18/11/26 10am’, which NME reports could suggest an announcement marking the record’s 35th anniversary next month. A fan shared a photo of the poster on social media.

Suede opened their own set with two songs from Antidepressants, ‘Disintegrate’ and ‘Dancing With the Europeans’, before moving to the ’90s classic ‘Trash’. Other tracks from the latest album included the title song, ‘June Rain’ and ‘Trance State’. Longtime fan favourites ‘Metal Mickey’, ‘Animal Nitrate’ and ‘Beautiful Ones’ also featured.

“Glasgow, we are the anti-nostalgia band,” frontman Brett Anderson said, introducing ‘Beautiful Ones’. “But sometimes we indulge ourselves just a little bit, because it feels nice, doesn’t it?”

Anderson and guitarist Richard Oakes also played an acoustic version of ‘The Wild Ones’. Then came the premiere. ‘My City’ is unreleased and expected to appear on an upcoming album, and the setlist lists it as a live debut. The band told the crowd they were giving Glasgow the world premiere of the song.

Where the new records stand

Suede have been hinting at a follow-up to Antidepressants, the album that earned a Mercury Prize nomination. Speaking to NME last week, the band said they are deep into progress on the record, which centres on an anarcho-punk sound. Anderson described it as another punk-based record and said he is still working out how to define it.

The Manics released their latest album, Critical Thinking, in early 2025. When they talked to NME last month, they described a batch of new songs, including ‘Threshold’, ‘Don’t Be Afraid To Be Afraid’ and ‘Recrudescence’, and said they are still searching for the thread that ties them together. The band also noted that this will be their 16th album, a number they said few of their contemporaries have come close to reaching.

The tour continues on Friday, October 30, with a stop at Leeds First Direct Arena. Shows in Manchester, London, Birmingham and more follow over the next couple of weeks, according to NME. The outlet has posted footage and full setlists from the Glasgow night, and fans can sign up for updates through the QR code.
